WILLIAM. . .GUTHRIE
Welcome to the website devoted to the Puritan minister of
Scotland, whose book John Owen
kept with him constantly, and of which Thomas Chalmers declared it was "The
best thing " he'd ever read! Read the biographies - there are several. Of
course, you can't go way without reading, or printing off, his major work -
"The Christian's Great Interest"
Why the "Puritan's Puritan?" - well,
listen, then, to the great John Owen - Prince of Puritans - "there is for a
gentleman Mr. Baillie of Jerviswood, a person of the greatest abilities I
almost ever met with; and for a divine," he went on, bringing from his pocket a
little gilt copy of Guthrie's treatise, "that author I take to have been one of
the greatest divines that ever wrote. It is my vade-mecum I carry it and
the Sedan New Testament about with me. I have written several folios, but there
is more divinity in it than in them all."

to explore the site of his famous descendant, Thomas Guthrie, who was
reckoned the most popular preacher of his time, for his robust speaking, and
