William Guthrie - Literature

There is not a lot of this - what there is, is very precious!
For a list of works held by the National Library of Scotland - click here.

We have his main work - The Christian's Great Interest . Read it here.
This is the book that great men like John Owen raved about. A "must read".

There are his Sermons - some of which I have unearthed - list below. These will be published as I get time. They come from J.Howie's memorable volume on "Sermons in Times of Persecution"

There is a short piece on "Conscience" extracted, I think, from one of his sermons. Read it - 5 minutes will do.

There are the Sermon "Sentences" preserved as an Appendix in Alexander Smellie's Version of "Interest". These were, he says, "gleaned from a precious manuscript volume - one of a noble band of seven - generously lent me by Rev. James Kennedy, B.D., the Librarian of New College, Edinburgh" - and are listed below. These too, will be published as time permits. Not time for a full sermon? Try one of these - they are bite-sized!

There is also a short memoir of his cousin, tutor and martyr, James. worth reading.
James Guthrie was of the noble line of the Guthrie Clan and went to his death for his Lord, in Edinburgh. His young cousin William wanted to be there, was but not allowed, as it was too dangerous.

Alexander Smellie has a lengthy introduction to his version of "The Christian's Great Interest". A condensed version of this is found in his book "Men of the Covenant"
In the same book is a "Commendation letter " of this great work, which is worthy of reading, too.

A memoir of Robert Traill has been added, also, as contributing a little to our meagre store. Traill was a friend of William Guthrie as well as of many other notable persons, and this is worth reading in its own right.

An anonymous person has also written some promotional material for the book (above)

There is here an article by J.I.Packer about "Why we need Puritans" - which should be required reading for every serious Christian and very well-worth reading in its own right. I commend it to you. My wife's reaction, when she read it was "Wow!".
