In 1992 I enrolled on a railtour covering Poland and
Russia, being desirous of seeing the last
main-line steam railways in
Europe working properly without preservation or heritage cultures
getting in
the way of authenticity. Eastern Europe was opening up, too, but it was still a
lot cheaper
than most of the world for travel and accomodation. I took a
video camera for most of my efforts
in photography, but also an old Practica
for a few stills. Here you can see the stills.
I was also very keen to
something of a country steeped in history, and long oppressed by its
neighbours.
You can choose here to see either the country, albeit a very
small part, or view the railways we visited
necessarily only those still
using steam, in 1992. See a map of the places visited here.
