Also called "Sweetheart Abbey" because of the origen, which was of the daughter of the last of the Galloway Kings, called Alan who herself was called Devorgilla and built this Abbey in 1275. She had been married to the rich and powerful John Balliol, and when he died she had his heart cut out, preserved in a casket, and buried it in this new Abbey she had built. the old one can be seen beside it. For this romantic reason it has its nickname. Devorgilla also endowed the present Balliol College in Cambridge with some of is money in memory of him.
