Catbells is a rather smashing little mountain close to Keswick, and easy enough for a Sunday after dinner stroll. Take your Granny, even? Here, the summit is seen top left, with some of the Newble family making there way onward. At the top is a wonderful view of Derwentwater, and if children are good, some wonderfully energising Kendal Mint Cake. (This is a concoction of glucose and sugar, made into a hard bar, or cake, and even taken up Everest on the 1953 expedition led by Sir John Hunt which was the first to reach the Everest summit.) Everest is some 29000', which makes Catbells MUCH more suitable for children (at around 1000')
